Former midfielder Robbie Savage has slammed Diego Dalot for failing to make a save for Rasmus Hojlund in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday.
The “Red Devils” scored first in this game from Joshua Zirkze in the 57th minute, but were equalized from a penalty kick by Miguel Oyarzabal in the 70th minute. In the second half, United had a chance to score when Dalot broke away on the right and in the middle, Hojlund sped past the opposing defenders. However, the Portuguese international chose to lock into the middle and wait for the right moment, which was eventually Patrick Dorku who charged in to shoot but the ball did not go into the frame.
“People can criticise Rasmus Hojlund for not scoring in 18 games, but look at him. He’s running up and why isn’t Dalot crossing? If I was the manager I’d be screaming at him,” Savage told TNT Sports.
“Hoylund is in front, he’s in front of the defender. It’s a difficult pass, just to cross it in. It’s unacceptable. People can criticise Hoylund, but he makes the right run and gets past the defender. He still doesn’t get a chance.”
“It’s unacceptable from Dalot in this situation. If I was the manager, he would have hit me. What was he thinking at that moment? You see Hojlund in front, pass the ball! That’s a perfect opportunity for Man United and Hojlund.”
“I don’t know why he didn’t pass it to Hojlund. That’s a good example of the support he should get. He’s been very lively until now but he hasn’t shown anything.”
